Artist Statement
I am dancing in order to arrive at my sense of reality while time flies away. In order to arrive at this great moment, I film and capture dance. By reframing and expressing what I felt and saw, I choreograph. The way I feel connected with the world and the others is when my personal voice comes out and is communicated to the society from being a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker.
By sharing dance with others and everything in the world, I collect and transcend energy and see the world in a spiritual state. I am recording the world with my eyes and mind, and then reshape them to build up my own ship that could float on the sea waves made by thoughts. As a choreographer, I take meanings from everything such as a handshake, sneeze, staring at someone, the feet in motion, the bicycle that showed up in dream, and etc. I always choreograph by reconstructing my memory clips, because while recalling those memories I could always be associated with some specific movements, the dancers, and a brand new story.
I am interested in accessing dance through theatrical method because I see dance as a very subjective live expression. The theater creates this space between the stage and viewers that measures dance objectively from the spectator’s place. I have a strong belief that dance is providing the vision of seeing and thinking differently through shifting one’s consciousness and perspective.
I develop my identity as an artist through seeing, improvising, and repeating, more specifically as a dancer and a visual artist, that assisted me with caring, feeling, and creating.
From reflecting on my works, one thing that I want to state is say more “Absolutely” than “No” in the art work. I found that compromising to reality you surrender to will restrain your thoughts. The creativity comes from every time I insisted to keep doing the same thing until I proceed. I could not proceed if the creative process stopped. It is important for me to have a contesting in between the reality and my beliefs. Nothing but the echo of the feelings about dance as long as reflecting to myself will help me figure out where I want to go and what my true belief is.
